As my stay in Vancouver winds down, and I have to think about my return to London and a version of reality, I thought I would reflect upon my time here and perhaps provide a small guide to those who find themselves in this city at some point in the future.

- Vancouverites display such a massive distrust of any publicly funded enterprise it would make any Telegraph or Daily Mail reader very proud.
- Vancouverites display such a massive distrust of any privately funded enterprise it would make any Guardian reader very proud.
- Despite the presence of a CFL team, this a one team town when it comes to sport. The Canucks are the focus for the city and current team captain Roberto Luongo must have some serious 'intestinal fortitude' as when he isn't the best thing since sliced bread, he is the devil himself wearing a hockey mask and waving a massive stick.
- The current mayor, Gregor Robertson, isn't above nipping down the boozer for a spot of lunch and a watch of the football; witnessed by me at the Three Lions Cafe when he turned up and watched the Arsenal v Barcelona Champions League first leg. Rather him than a floppy haired gimp.
- It is perfectly OK to smoke the "stickiest of the icky", the wacky tabbaccy, the gange, the demon weed anywhere on the street (walk down town on any afternoon, take a huge gulp of air and you'll smell it). Same for heroin. Got a habit and some money? Come here and skag up in the street. It's fine! But pop open a beer in a park? You could be busted as if you'd stole something.
- The curious obsession with telling anyone who'll listen that this is a "very livable city", a "world city", the "best place city on earth", a "great place to live". And indeed there is a lot of truth in those statements, stunning natural beauty, easy access to public transport, improving cycle lanes, great bars, great restaurants, plentiful housing, two universities. Just don't mention the low rates of pay compared to the high cost of living. This isn't a cheap place to live.
- Terse elderly Chinese women.
- Why so unfriendly? There is a great essay to be written on the natural unfriendliness of Vancouverites. I had a hard time making friends, but as I mentioned to a guy a few months back, perhaps because of the high cost of living here, there is need to be efficient with making the most out of friends/family and the time you spend with them. Who can afford to entertain perspective friends when pub beer costs?
- Mountains. No where have I been where I can look up, see mountains, know I am heading in the right direction and also have to stop and go 'WOW! Mountains'.
- Water. Water water everywhere. Low tide and a wade into the water is great fun.
- Craft beers. So many craft breweries here or in Washington State and Oregon producing wonderful beers. And great brew pubs which offer a huge range of these amazing beers with none of the knobishness that CAMRA UK members seem to revel in. CAMRA BC - Top job.
- Wine. The Okanagan and Vancouver Island have wineries that are easily reached in half a day or so. Good reds and seemingly a world leader in Gewürztraminers. Tuck into the Naramata Bench with abandon.
- Plurality and acceptance. Never have I heard so many different accents describe with such pride and enthusiasm their love of an adopted country. A quite remarkable thing. CBC covers hockey with a dedicated Punjabi language service and there isn't a cry about how "these people should speak English". Also, like the start of an old joke, I saw a Mosque, a Sikh Temple and Shinto Temple all bang next to one another. The leading CBC weather person here comes from the UK, the leading CBC political reporter is also from the UK. And accents of all kinds can be heard in every facet of daily life.
- Public Art. So as a Londoner I am used to any number of huge, well funded, well stocked free museums. No so much of that here. However the Vancouver Biennale does provide a wonderful and diverse collection of sculptures, placed around the city to enjoy when taking a long walk. Which is better then a smack in the chops.
- The Seawall. One of the best things about the city. Coming here or living here? Get a bike and go riding.

So get there. Have a go.

I saw this film because it was on a best of the decade list and wasn't one of the "one's that always make the list" films. Ostensibly a warning message about the internet/youtube/happy slapping generation that was shot with, from from I read, an Elephant-style. Elephant the Gus Van Sant film, not the floppy-eared flying things from that other elephant film and no relation to Deadwood actor, Timothy Olyphant. I didn't think that was entirely true.

Although it is not an out and out scare film, it does highlight dangers of teens getting jollies from filming one another fighting/doing it/being generally daft. I did feel like there was a stark warning about how we have the ability to document our lives in exacting detail and as adults we have some ability to discern what is OK and what isn't. But if your life experience became a mix of sex, violence and humour learned from internet clips in lieu of adequate female/male models then perhaps we have to face up to a generation used to acting inappropriately but worse, recording that for others to learn from.

Was it any good? Hmmm. It is punishingly slow and though Elephant was slow, I never felt it dragged. This doesn't maintain that drifting, floaty style and suffers for it. Our knowledge of the characters is limited to seeing the stereotype of American prep students; largely white and privileged, aiming for good colleges and comfortable lives ahead which does leave me a little cold. If the white middle class are the arbiters of what is morally correct, then perhaps the film is making the case that we are in for some trouble once this generation comes to positions of power or thought shaping and monkey sex tennis becomes a prime time hit.

This is loads better though...

I haven't spent a ton of money lately on hair products but it does feel like it. I am on my third attempt at finding something which will give me shine, control and that certain oily look and I think I may have solved an issue with the Lucky Tiger Cru-Butch. I have some in my hair right as I write and it is tough muther'f'in stuff. I may need a haircut to remove it or some paint thinner. Wonderful.

I am also a little bit beardy at the mo as well, so I have invested in some moustache wax to help stop me looking like a flippin' hippy. This is Clubman Wax and it feels quite good at the moment.
